Hurrican Aftermath (The Flood)

Here are some images I took when I went back to the house this morning (Friday).

Our house sits elevated about 3 1/2 feet above the ground. At the moment, the water is about 1 1/2 feet from being flush with our porch. If it rises above that, it will begin to go into the house.

The pictures:

The water from the Amite river has continued to rise, and is expected to "crest" by Monday, after which it should begin to recede.

The Yellow house in the middle is our neighbor. Our house is immediately to the right (facing house).

From Hurricane Gustav

Yesterday we could drive up to the trees on the right of the photo.
We were able to walk through water (knee-deep) and get into the house to get Mia (the cat)

Through the trees, you can see the bottom of our porch on our house.

Dont forget the River!

So, althought we managed to steer clear of any wind or tree damage, since we live just a 1/4 mile form the river, all of the rain will usually cause some flooding.

Our neighbor called us Wednesday morning, to warn us Tuesday night, police were knocking on doors to tell people to evacuate.

We jumped in the car Wednesday morning to go get Mia (the cat)

We couldnt get into our driveway, but we were able to reach the parking lot of the park across the street.

As you can see, the street is now flooded up to knee height. The back yard is a little deeper, so at this point, all we have lost is the lawnmower (guess I wont have to mow lawn for a few weeks), and my old hockey gear that was stored in the shed. (I hadnt touched it in 7 years anyways)

Welcoming Gustav

Shannon's mother lives in New Orleans and decided against staying there (remember Katrina), and she came up to hunker down with us.

Unfortunately, There are many Large and unstable trees around our house and judging from the path of Gustav, we decided to find a hotel to stay in.

Shannon diligently called around, and found the last available room up the road where we live.

Panoramic shot from my cel phone

The night before Gustav was expected to make landfall, I stayed at the house with Mia, whild Shannon, Sylvie, and Sharon nested at the hotel

I got this shot at about 9am as I was driving to Hotel.
